 Mary Cassatt Selfportrait |
Mary Cassatt was a daughter of American banker. She moved to France after academic studies in America. She began by showing her work in the official Salon of 1872. Her subtle sense of colour and the quality of her drawing provoked the unalloyed admiration of Degas. Degas persuaded her in 1877 to join the group of impressionists, which greeted her more as a colleague than a disciple. She participated in collective exhibitions of the group, where she presented paintings of a certain intimacy.. Her longstanding close and cordial relationship with Degas, who willingly accompanied her in Paris and who would evoke certain of her features in his paintings, broke down late in her life at a time when Degas' misanthropy was growing along with his blindness. She also eventually became almost blind and at the age of seventy would have to give up painting. |
